AFTRS
Creative Media School
:: Q&A :: with Peter Giles, Head of the ATFRS Digital Media Department
- 27 July 2005. AFTRS is the premier national film and television school
with several digital media education initiatives. Gamenews.com.au editor
Tim Richards interviewed Peter about the schools video game initiatives.
--------------------------------------
TR
[Gamenews.com.au]: Generally, how has AFTRS sought to provide for students
interested in the video game industry?
Peter
Giles [PG]: We have traditionally had a strong flow of graduates going
into the games, animation and visual effects industries - mainly as
artists and animators who have finished our high end 3D animation and
visual effects courses. As time goes on there are is a lot more cross
over between these areas of our entertainment industries and, with the
release of the XBox 360 and PS3 that relationship is only going to get
closer. We have had graduates working on triple A console games titles
as well as major feature films such as Lord of the Rings, Moulin Rouge,
, The Matrix and soon to be released Valiant.

TR:
Do you feel that teaching about video game making and its various aspects,
sits well within the traditional film, television, and radio streams
of the institution?
PG:
It's not a natural mix I've got to say and I don't think enough film
and TV people really get it yet - but to me it is an inevitable evolution
of entertainment and there is only going to be more exchange and contact
between these sectors in the future. We are taking a cross platform
approach in our teaching and, rather than just concentrating on a single
implementation of an idea, look at how to exploit it in multiple ways
on multiple platforms. Our mission at the moment is to break down barriers
between different silos in the industry - whether IT, telecommunications,
broadcasting, games, animation or feature film. This is a big challenge
but where all the action is going to happen somewhere in the middle
of these spaces. We have launched a new Grad Diploma course in Emerging
Media and Interactive Design which is very much driven by exploring
notions of play within the emerging cross platform environment. More
information is available at www.interactive.edu.au

TR:
Between the Melbourne and Sydney AFTRS courses, there seems to be a
greater focus on the video game making in Sydney; is this true, and
is there any particular reason for this?
PG:
Sydney is the location of our main campus where most of our full time
courses are run. These are mainly a 1 year grad dip and 1 year MA program.
We also run a wide range of short professional courses and these are
spread out across the country - we run them in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane,
Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart. Melbourne is our biggest state office
and we have just moved to spectacular new premises in the Docklands
area. We will be expanding our range of courses run there next year
including the launch of a new Screen Business School. We will be running
a wider range of digital courses also in Melbourne and will be trialing
some new flexibly-based courses which allow participants to complete
some components of a Grad Dip program in Melbourne. One of our cutting
edge offerings is a course on Sound and Music for Games - this leverages
some of the considerable expertise in music composition and sound design
we have at AFTRS.
TR:
Will AFTRS soon add 'Games' to its name somewhere - the Australian Film,
Television, Radio, and Games School?
PG:
We've decided not to change the name of the School at present but to
stay with AFTRS - though you will see the acronym much more than the
full name. 'Cross Platform' is more the direction we are taking because
we think we can play a strong role in helping our industry create its
own digital content by encouraging a more wholistic approach to production.
Games are a strong part of this emerging media environment along with
social networking, blogging, digital distribution in its many forms,
innovations in internet delivered television services, interface design
and content for handhelds. We have just launched our Laboratory in Advanced
Media Production in order to stimulate digital content creation in the
Australian industry. It is very much industry focussed and will include
professionals from all areas of the entertainment industries. More info
at lamp.aftrs.edu.au.
We are running information days around the country in late August/early
Sept - Melbourne day is 26th Aug.

TR:
Finally, what is one thing you have realised about the video game industry
in Australia or globally?
PG:
It's growing quickly, much more quickly than other areas of the entertainment
industries - once new consoles are out which are connected to broadband
I think the divisions between games, television and the internet are
going to begin to break down dramatically. Bring it on!
Many
thanks to Peter for his time.

US Video Game Associations Sue US State Government
The Illinois State Legislature's recently introduced law to restrict sale
and hire of violent video games is the subject of a law suit launched
this week by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the Video Software
Dealers Association, and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association in
the USA. The argument against the law is based on the US Constitution's
First Amendment right to free speech. The president of the Video Software
Dealers Association said "Rather than imposing restrictions that cannot
be understood by retailers or sustained legally, the governor should be
working with retailers and the video game industry to educate parents
about video game ratings and to encourage parents to utilize those ratings."
The ESA cites that in 2004, the average game buyer was 37 years old and
the average game player was 30; in addition, of all games sold in 2004,
only 16% were rated Mature. For the ESA website, click the link here.

Update: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Rating Changed
to Adults-only (USA)
The US Entertainment Software Rating Board has changed the classification
rating for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from M for mature to AO for Adults
Only. Prior to the decision, several large retail chains in the US, including
Wal-Mart and Target, had decided to pull the game from their shelves.
The Washington Post reports the story, and states also that pubisher Take-Two,
owner of developer Rockstar, "admitted for the first time that the sex
scenes had been built into the retail version of that game, not just the
PC version but also those written for Xbox and PlayStation2 consoles."
In America, over 5 million copies of the PS2 version of the game have
been sold since release October 2004. For the article, click here.
Expect this decision to reverberate to other classification bodies around
the world, save that Australia does not have an adults only rating for
games, an inequitable position given Australia has an adults only rating
for films and other media.

THQ Engages Movie Agent for Destroy All Humans! Property

comes with two unloackable 1950's films including 'Plan 9 From Outerspace'
as an obvious tribute to the games influences. United Talent Agency will
oversee activities related to development, financing, production and distribution,
