Pro Evolution
Soccer 4 On Xbox Live
The fourth installment
of Konamis popular Pro Evolution Soccer franchise looks set to include
full support for Xbox live online play. The rumours started after journalists
attending the Game Stars Live consumer show reported seeing an Xbox Live
button within the Pro Evolution Soccer 4 (PES4) build on display. While
official confirmation has yet to come from Konami, unofficial sources
claim that an announcement is on the way. Unfortunately it looks like
the PS2 version will not include the same online functionality. Pro
Evolution Soccer is the name given to the European franchise based
on the long-running Japanese Word Soccer Winning Eleven series
- PSE4 being developed from Winning Eleven 8 which managed to sell one
million copies on its first day of release in Japan. For more on

Consoles
Blu-Ray in the PS3
The next generation consoles could become an important new front in the upcoming format war over High-Definition digital disk formats. Sony has announced that it intends to include support for a read-only version of its Blu-Ray HD disk format in the Playstation 3. Blu-Ray is one of two competing HD disk formats about to hit the market (the other being the Toshiba supported HD-DVD). The single-layer, read-only version Sony has planned for the PS3 is said to store up to 23Gb of data, nearly 5 times that of existing single-layer DVDs. So far it's anyone's guess as to which HD format will become the new VHS and which will become the new Beta. You can read more about it here. John Curtin [11 August 2004]

Game Threatens To Destroy Society
Victorian Shadow Attorney-General Andrew McIntosh has called for the banning of recently released game 'Hitman Contracts' after the Office of Film & Literature Classification gave it an M15+ classification. The game developed by IO Interactive and published by Eidos Interactive involves carrying out a variety of contract killings using the mysterious hitman '47'. Those supporting the proposed ban are concerned that such a game not only glorifies the life of professional whackers, but may also result in younger players growing up to "sneak around and shoot people in the back of the head". 'Hitman Contacts' is the third installment in the Hitman franchise (also the third to be released in Australia) and has received fairly positive reviews. As yet no reports have surfaced of children flocking to careers as hired assassins. You can read more about it here. If you think you would like to decide for yourself, are over 15 years old, and have your local MP's permission you can buy the game here. John Curtin [19 July 2004]
